About Taquería El Zócalo

From Oaxaca to Oakland — family recipes, handmade tortillas, and the flavors we grew up with.

Our Story

Our Kitchen

Taquería El Zócalo was born from family cooking and weekend gatherings — a space to share Oaxacan flavors with Oakland. We hand-press tortillas, simmer mole negro the slow way, and grill meats over high heat for that signature sear.

Our menu blends antojitos (street snacks) with house specialties: molcajete, tasajo, chilaquiles, and seasonal plates. Everything starts with good ingredients, a hot comal, and ganas de hacerlo bien.

Craft & Traditions

A few things we don’t compromise on.

Handmade Tortillas

Fresh masa, pressed to order, finished on a hot comal for flavor and texture.

House Mole

Our mole negro is layered and slow-cooked — deep, smoky, a little sweet, unmistakably ours.

Local & Seasonal

We source locally when possible and build plates around peak produce and freshness.

From Oaxaca To Oakland

Zócalo is a meeting place — in Mexico, and here in our neighborhood. We cook the food that feels like home, with a few twists we’ve picked up serving our community every day.

  • • Blue-corn memelitas & empanadas
  • • Quesabirrias with house broth
  • • Seafood tacos (del mar)
  • • Chilaquiles, enmoladas & enchiladas
